As they docked in the hangar bay, Jaden contacted Venus through his implants to let her know theyâd arrived. They met her and Ezra in the medical bay. Malia carried the skull telekinetically, and Venus activated a gravitational beam to move it to a lab table. Scanning the organ, she said, âItâs remarkably thin. Like a layer of human skin. The fibrous tendrils are still intact.â
Using a surgical laser, she removed the rear section of the skull, then detached the Anunnaki organ, placing it in a Petri dish. It had started curling up as she worked, and once she used the laser to remove the residual tissue, it rolled up all the way into a thin cylinder. Venus used a pair of surgical instruments to unroll it, then used an energy beam to sterilize it.
âThis certainly changes things,â she told them. âI prepared for a craniotomy, but with it rolled up like this, we should be able to insert it endoscopically.â
âIâm sorry, English, please?â Jaden said with a grin.
âIt means that instead of removing a section of my skull to access the cerebellum, sheâll be able to make a small incision and insert the organ with an endoscope,â Malia explained.
âYes, exactly,â Venus said with a nod. âThe only trouble will be unrolling the thing once itâs in there.â
âIs there any way to tell if it will function?â Malia asked.
âIâve been thinking about this,â Venus said. âAnd there is no way to tell for sure until we implant it in your brain. However, Iâd like to run a couple of tests. I suspected this thing would be more machine than living tissue, based on the fact that it does not connect to the body with blood vessels or nerve cells. Thus there is really only one way it can be powered.â
âBody heat?â Malia asked.
Venus nodded. âIâd like to try applying heat and see what happens.â
âGo ahead,â Malia agreed.
Venus created a force field around the organ and its Petri dish, then increased the temperature inside to match Maliaâs body heat. âRemarkable,â she muttered. Activating a holographic display next to the force field, she brought up a scan of the organ. âLook at the electrical activity. The thing lit up with the increase in heat.â
âSo, itâs still functional,â Jaden observed.
Before Venus could reply, the organ unrolled itself, lying flat in the Petri dish.
âFascinating,â Venus said. âYes, so it would appear.â She lowered the heat, and the scans showed the electrical activity diminishing again. Within moments, the organ curled back up into a cylinder.
âWell, letâs do it,â Malia said, taking a deep breath.
âIâm ready whenever you are, darling,â Venus told her.
They moved to the rear area of the medical bay, where Venus had prepared for the surgery. Her two assistants were waiting for them there, a man and a woman. Malia lay down on the operating table, and Venus had one of her people prepare the endoscope. Jaden wished Malia luck, then he and Ezra backed away, and Venus activated a force field to isolate the area.
